Death Announcement: John Manderson Hu Messam (1960-2021)

John Manderson Hu Messam
April 1960 – December 2021

Sunday 26th, 2022 (See end of post for update on Funeral)

We wish to announce the passing of John Manderson Hu Messam, Born: 21 April 1960. Died: 26 December, 2021.

On the 28th of February 2020, two days after his 2nd major stroke with dementia, John at the age of 59 years submitted his life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, while in A&E, UHWI, and received God’s salvation. God then became his Eternal Life Coach. From February 28th, 2020, to the day of his passing, God assigned John an extremely rigorous race. He cried his own tears as he ran his race. He fell down often on his arduous track, but kept surprising his family, well-wishers, and spectators, by getting up, and resuming his stride, even when weakened. Some folks exclaimed “Him strong!” and “He’s a fighter!” Those who understood said “But God…!”

Images of Friendship

Friendship

I have two images of friendship that I carry around in my head. They help me to process my friendship experiences and guide me in how to relate to other persons in a safe and healthy and freeing way. I share them with you, and would love to know what you think of them, and to learn about the belief system you rely on to guide your friendship with others. Continue reading

CAN’T RUN FROM RACE!

“Can’t Run From Race” was first published on my facebook wall https://www.facebook.com/cheryllmessam on this past Wednesday, July 10th, 2013. Given tonight’s Zimmerman Trial Verdict of NOT GUILTY, I felt led to re-post it here via my personal blog. Thanks for visiting my blog. I appreciate you. ~ Cheryll Messam

CAN’T RUN FROM RACE. Race matters. It is like our emotions at times, present when you don’t want it and absent when you need it. First off my brother is married to an Italian, Caucasian woman. My first cousins are married to Negroes, Hispanics and Caucasians. I share that for transparency. I was raised by parents who hosted Caucasian guests in our home often and had longstanding friendships with Caucasians. Caucasians were very very kind and powerfully helpful to me when I studied, lived and worked in the USA for more than a decade. So throughout my life I have had genuine friendships and very very positive encounters with Caucasian folk. Continue reading

Words in Season for A Season of Trouble

Hi Friends,

If you are living in Jamaica right now, you will notice that there is a lot of ‘heaviness’ all around us. Our economy is taking some serious hits and we are being called by our Government to make some truly hard sacrifices  (e.g. JDX and extracting funds from our National Housing Trust). We are watching our Government make moves that we don’t fully understand or trust where it will all lead. Also in the mix, is the aggressively changing and deteriorating pattern of our social reality, with a seeming explosion of violent crimes against women, and children and family-member-on-family-member crimes. So with less and less money to meet our monthly bills, the devaluing of our dollar against the major currencies, and crime escalating daily, quite understandably many feel helpless, trapped and FEAR IS A CONSTANT COMPANION. VITAL WOMEN LOSING THEIR VITALITY

VITAL WOMEN LOSING VITALITY. Father I had a conversation very recently that just caused me to tank a bit in my Spirit [BUT YOU GOD] and has left me burdened. It was another woman who had lost her vitality. This was another woman reeling from the backhand of rejection from spouse of many years and his inclusion of unwelcome third parties; rejection from child of her womb; rejection in her professional life. Rejection which has sucked her out, left her exposed, and unsupported by those to whom she feels and desires the most closeness. Rejection which has left her limp, and is causing her to rubbish her education, rubbish her accomplishments, and rubbish her previous triumphs in hard times. Continue reading

Setting Spiritual Goals as a Way of Loving Our God Back

For a couple years now, I have had the sheer pleasure of relating to God and loving Him back by setting spiritual goals to carry me through a year. Last year I began 2011 by writing in my journal simply “Praise will become my nature.” Then I set about wondering “How?” Eventually I decided to use the book of Psalms as my “Learning to Praise God” base. I sat Continue reading

EXPLORING BITTERNESS IN ME EXERCISE

My pastor Rev. Astor Carlyle of  Webster Memorial United Church (Kingston, Jamaica) shared with us the powerful and timely reminder that “BITTERNESS like acid destroys the vessel as well as the object on which it is poured.” This exercise below is intended to support any person who genuinely recognizes that Bitterness is not good, and wants no part of it in his/her life, but even after several attempts to overcome bitterness, finds that it is still present, and that a stronghold has set in.
